I truly can't even put into words how amazing this afternoon and evening were.
I suppose if I had to, I'd say: Life Changing.
After I accidentally got off at the wrong bus stop and had to walk a mile or so to the correct location (which is no big deal, I've been averaging about 10 miles walking per day so far) I finally met up with my lovely WWOOF host, Jan, in Brae.
We came back to Hillswick, and I am not joking about, this place is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen in the most beautiful location I have ever seen. A portion of the house is about 400+ years old, but the rest of it is about 250 years old. It's as charming as anything you could possibly read about.
After about 10 minutes or so after arriving here, Jan's brother came over for a visit. We had tea (with cream and two sugars) and sat around the peat fire and talked. Then we had a lovely supper with the rest of the fam.
Peat fires are amazing. They have this wonderful, earthy smell to them and it just fills up the room and makes it the perfect temperature.
Everything smells amazing here. Inside and out.
I'm currently the only wwoofer here, and am staying in the B&B portion of the house that is wonderful. Jan placed a hot water bottle in my bed to keep it warm and cozy.
Everything here is cozy. It's amazing.
It was an evening of great tea, food, company, and atmosphere that I will never forget for as long as I live.
It's one thing to visit a new place or country on vacation, but it's entirely another thing to be able to come into a home and get to know about each other's culture.
It expands your mind in ways you didn't know possible.
I am in awe of every moment at this place, and I can't wait to get to work in the garden and around the house, as well as hopefully getting to meet the baby seal they are nursing back to health here right now.
I will have more photos to post tomorrow when I get the chance to go out and shoot them in the morning.
