The Weekend

The weekend went by in a blur of baking flour and butter.

I spent the majority of Saturday in the kitchen cooking quiches and a sweet potato pie.

It's funny here because pie is not associated as a sweet thing, so I had to explain that the sweet potato pie was a dessert and not a side dish or main course for dinner. I also had to explain what a pie tin/pan was.

Sunday was spent prepping and hauling stuff out to the Transition Shetland event. At the community halls here they will have Sunday teas where you pay 3 pounds and you get tea and all the baked goods you'd like.

I got to meet another WWOOFer from a closeby farm. Another American from Texas. It was really strange hearing an American accent after hearing nothing but British, Scottish, Irish, and Shetland accents. We had a good chat about WWOOFing and how amazing it is. We also comiserated about how awful the 20 questions are when you try to get through immigration here and have to lie about the fact that you are wwoofing. He's apparently been proposing to every girl he meets here trying to get citizenship. haha I don't blame him.

I'm currently sitting in the Hay Dock Cafe in Lerwick enjoying my fruit scone with jam and cream and a cup of tea.

I'm going to do a whole post eventually on the tea culture here. It's awesome.

I'm headed down to Bigton this afternoon and will be staying at the Hayhoull Bed and Breakfast there and then going over to Elma Johnson's, a local Shetland storyteller, for a traditional shetland meal. I'm very excited about the whole thing.

Tomorrow I head up to Eshaness to stay in a little wigwam cabin. I hope the sun comes out by then. The gale has been blowing through all weekend. Themist is b eautiful in its own way, but I want the sun to come out so I can go take photos!

I may or may not have internet access this evening, so stay tuned!!

Until then...
